Sampling settlement batches without drowning in volume

· 5 min read

Printed charts and analytical notes on a clean desk

Testing every settlement line is neither feasible nor informative. Good sampling in payment audits follows risk strata — high-value batches, holiday-affected days, and newly launched rails — then fills the remainder with random selections.

Define the population first

A population is a settlement file set with a clear start and end timestamp, not “everything finance exported last night.” Wrong populations produce confident wrong conclusions.

Weight by exception history

If last quarter’s findings clustered on a particular processor report, overweight that report in this cycle. Sampling is allowed to remember.

Document the ‘why not’

Every batch you skip should have a one-line reason. Reviewers and boards ask; a blank explanation looks like avoidance.
